CFO bunq Tech

Ready to get shit done?

bunq Tech powers bunq across the Netherlands, the UK, the US, and beyond. As we scale into a global multi-license structure, we need a CFO who can turn Tech into a disciplined, profitable, automation-first financial engine.

This is not a reporting role.
This is not a “manage finance from a distance” role.
This is not a role for someone who needs 6 months to understand the business.

We need someone who can walk in, understand the cost base, challenge engineering spend, build a SaaS-style financial model, create real-time visibility, and make capital allocation sharper from day one. You will own the financial model behind bunq Tech: pricing, transfer pricing, unit economics, cost control, reporting, automation, and investment decisions. The role is built around scaling bunq Tech as a global platform business with clear profitability, disciplined governance, and measurable ROI.

Take Ownership:

Architect bunq Tech’s financial operating model: define how Tech creates value, how costs are allocated, how teams are funded, and how decisions are made.

  • Build a SaaS-style financial model for bunq Tech, including unit economics, pricing logic, transfer pricing, internal charging, profitability, and ROI.

  • Use AI and automation to redesign finance workflows, removing manual reporting, repetitive analysis, chasing, and spreadsheet-heavy processes.

  • Map how work currently happens across Finance, Tech, Product, Engineering, and Operations, then identify where we can save time, reduce handovers, and improve ownership.

  • Build real-time visibility into Tech performance: cloud costs, engineering spend, vendor costs, delivery efficiency, product ROI, and profitability.

  • Challenge engineering, cloud, tooling, vendor, and product spend with data — not opinions.

  • Create a capital allocation framework that shows where bunq Tech should invest, where we should stop investing, and where we need sharper accountability.

  • Build automated dashboards and reporting workflows so leadership can make decisions without waiting for manual month-end reporting.

  • Design governance that scales across a multi-entity structure, including transfer pricing, intercompany logic, controls, reporting discipline, and regulatory separation.

  • Partner directly with CEO, CTO, Product, Engineering, Finance, and Operations to turn financial insight into action.

Hands-on examples of what you will need to do:

  • Take bunq Tech’s current cost base and turn it into a clear unit economics model: cost per product, feature, cloud unit, team, or service.

  • Build a simple but scalable internal SaaS charging model.

  • Review cloud, engineering, vendor, and tooling spend and identify where we can save 20% without slowing product delivery.

  • Use AI to analyse recurring finance tasks and propose which workflows should be automated, eliminated, or owned differently.

  • Map how monthly reporting currently works, then redesign it into an automated reporting flow using clean source data and dashboards.

  • Build a decision framework that helps leadership answer: “Should we fund this product/engineering investment or not?”

This challenge is perfect for you if

  • You have led finance in a SaaS, platform, fintech, tech, or high-growth product business.

  • You understand SaaS and platform economics: ARR/MRR, gross margin, CAC/LTV, payback, pricing, unit economics, and internal charging models.

  • You can architect an operating model, not just manage a finance team.

  • You have experience redesigning workflows, removing manual work, and using automation or AI to make teams faster.

  • You can look at an organisation and identify where time is wasted, where ownership is unclear, and where work should be redesigned.

  • You have managed large engineering, cloud, vendor, product, or tooling budgets and can challenge spend with measurable ROI.

  • You have owned or strongly influenced a P&L, not just reported on one.

  • You understand multi-entity or multi-jurisdiction finance structures.

  • You are comfortable with transfer pricing, intercompany models, financial controls, governance, and reporting discipline.

  • You can zoom out to strategy and zoom in to dashboards, workflows, cost lines, and execution details.

How we hire

This role will be advertised until 22 June 2026.

We will review every application we receive. However, we do not use CV screening as the main filter. Instead, the first step of the process includes a few knockout questions and a Neurolytics test.

Why?

Because we want to understand how you think, how you solve problems, and whether you can operate at bunq speed. For this role, experience on paper is not enough. We need to see whether you can structure complex problems, challenge assumptions, work with data, and turn ideas into practical decisions.

Some candidates may be rejected early in the process based on the knockout questions or the assessment. This is intentional. It helps us focus the process on people who are most likely to succeed in the role and avoids wasting time on interviews that will not lead to the right match.

The assessment is not only about cognitive ability. It is also about how you approach ownership, problem-solving, prioritisation, and execution. We do not use AI to make hiring decisions or automatically reject candidates. The filters are set up by us, reviewed by us, and used to keep the process fair, consistent, and focused.
