As you read this document, it’s essential to understand that compliance at bunq is not a standalone function—it’s part of our mission to serve Eva. Compliance enables us to design and deliver products that meet regulatory standards while staying true to our core belief: that Eva remains at the heart of everything we do.

This mindset makes compliance the perfect enabler for Eva - enhancing their experience, safety, and security.

1 Why do we have a privacy policy? 📜

At bunq, everything we do revolves around Eva, our user champion. That includes ensuring transparency and security when it comes to personal data, including for those considering joining our team.

Automated Decision-Making & Fairness

At bunq, we use automated decision-making in the initial stages of your application process. This allows us to efficiently identify candidates who best align with the role, ensuring we build a team that can continue to serve Eva -  the user at the heart of everything we do. Once you pass these initial assessments, a real person will manually review your application to make sure everything is assessed fairly.

When it comes to assessing candidates, the automated part of the process is based on clear, objective criteria, focusing on the results of the abstract reasoning test and how well a candidate fits the role. No hidden biases, no guesswork—just a fair shot for everyone.

But fairness also means giving people control over their own data. That’s why candidates have the right to reach out to us if they want to correct any data or request a manual review of their results. It’s all about transparency and making sure no one is left in the dark. This document includes a contact email where candidates can exercise their GDPR rights easily. Because at bunq, we believe in keeping things simple, fair, and in full control—just like how I expect my bank to work for me.

Automated decision-making in recruitment is based on Article 22(2)(a) of the GDPR, as it is “necessary for entering into, or performance of, a contract between the data subject and a data controller.” By applying to bunq, you acknowledge and accept this privacy policy, including the automated decision-making process.

Background Checks & Compliance

At bunq, trust and transparency are key to building a great relationship with you—our future team member. When you’re officially hired, we’re legally required to conduct a background check to ensure compliance with regulations and to safeguard Eva. By verifying this information, we maintain the security and integrity of our operations, ensuring that every team member meets the standards needed to protect Eva’s trust in bunq.

As part of this process, we might ask for documents like a Certificate of Conduct (VOG) or its equivalent, depending on local laws in your country.

3 Why do we process your personal data? 🎯

Your personal data (whether required or voluntarily provided to us) will only be processed for recruitment purposes. These recruitment purposes include the setting up or conducting of interviews, reviewing and discussing your application and attached documents, assessing whether to make you an offer of employment (and what the offer should consist of), executing the required background checks and screening, improving bunq’s recruitment process, and for maintenance of a record of applicants.

If we ever want to use your personal data for purposes beyond what’s outlined here, we’ll always ask for your explicit consent. For instance, if we believe you’d be a great fit for our Talent Community, we’ll ask if we can keep your information for a longer period. This way, we can reach out to you when a role that aligns with your skills and ambitions opens up.

We might also reach out after certain steps in your application to get feedback on your experience. This is completely voluntary and anonymous, helping us improve the process for future candidates like you.

4 Disclosure of personal data? 🔓

At bunq, safeguarding your personal data is a priority. We only share your information with third parties for recruitment purposes or when legally required to do so. And don’t worry - your data stays protected. If we ever need to share your personal data for any other reason, we’ll always ask for your explicit consent first.

5 What is the legal basis for the processing? ⚖️

We process your personal data because we have a legitimate reason to do so—mainly for recruitment and to meet legal requirements. Without processing your personal data, we wouldn’t be able to assess if bunq is the right place for you.  But don’t worry—we only process the data we truly need and nothing more. If we ever want to use your data for anything beyond recruitment or legal purposes, we’ll always ask for your explicit consent first.

6 How long do we keep your personal data? ⏳

We will keep your personal data only for the necessary period to serve bunq’s legitimate interest in retaining it for recruitment purposes, based on your consent to this privacy policy, and to fulfill our legal obligation in case of potential disputes.

More information can be found here: www.autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl.

9 Data Protection Officer 👮

We have appointed a Data Protection Officer, who is responsible for supervising our processing of personal data and advising on security and technology. Our DPO is officially registered at the Dutch Data Protection Authority. If, despite all the above, you ever feel that your data is not properly secured, has been misused, or if you believe that bunq does not adequately guarantee the correct processing of personal data, please send an email to privacy@bunq.com - we’re here to help!
